Game Recap: Softball |

Opening Day

ROSEMONT, Ill. --- IU South Bend softball opened the 2026 season Friday night with a split in Rosemont, dropping the opener to Culver-Stockton before bouncing back in emphatic fashion with a 12-5 win over Rochester Christian.

The Titans showcased both offensive firepower and resilience across the doubleheader, finishing opening night with 29 hits and their first win of the season under head coach Annie Dehnke.

Game One: Culver-Stockton 11, IU South Bend 2

IU South Bend struck first in the night's opening contest, manufacturing a run in the second inning. After Peyton Norman worked a walk and Savannah Hamilton singled, sophomore Jaylah Harlan lined an RBI single to right to give the Titans a 1-0 lead.

Culver-Stockton answered with a three-run third inning and used back-to-back four-run frames in the fifth and sixth to pull away for the 11-2 decision.

Freshman Ella Chelminiak made an immediate impact in her collegiate debut, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Harlan added two hits, while Hamilton and Elyse Starr each contributed multi-hit performances as the Titans tallied 10 hits in the loss.

Hamilton got the start in the circle, working 4.1 innings before Harlan came on in relief. Despite matching Culver-Stockton with 10 hits through four innings, the Titans were unable to slow the Wildcats' late offensive surge.

Game Two: IU South Bend 12, Rochester Christian 5

IU South Bend exploded for four runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 12-5 victory over Rochester Christian.

Chelminiak set the tone with a leadoff double, and the Titans followed with three straight RBI knocks from Savannah Hamilton, Reece Douglass and Peyton Norman to jump out to a 4-0 advantage.

IU South Bend added three more in the second to build a 7-0 cushion before Rochester Christian rallied with five runs across the third and fourth innings to trim the deficit to 9-5.

That was as close as it would get.

Douglass delivered the biggest swing of the night in the fourth inning, launching a two-run home run to extend the lead. Mikayla La Bounty later added an RBI triple in the seventh, and Hamilton capped the scoring as the Titans piled up 19 hits in the win.

Chelminiak finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while La Bounty and Grace Swangin each collected three hits. Douglass and Hamilton drove in three runs apiece in a balanced offensive effort.

Sophomore Elyse Starr went the distance in the circle, scattering 10 hits while striking out five to secure the season's first victory.

IU South Bend opens the year at 1-1 and will look to carry its Game Two momentum into the remainder of its Rosemont slate on Saturday beginning with Madonna at 11:00 am.
