Wild Day Two

ROSEMONT, Ill. --- IU South Bend endured a tough Saturday in Rosemont, falling to Madonna in the opener before suffering a heartbreaking 16-15 extra-inning loss to Rochester Christian in a back-and-forth thriller.

Game One: Madonna 10, IU South Bend 1

Madonna jumped on the Titans early and never looked back in a 10-1 decision Saturday morning.

A leadoff home run in the first inning set the tone, and Madonna capitalized on defensive miscues to build a 3-0 advantage after one. The Crusaders added four more runs in the second and continued to extend the lead with multi-run frames in the third and fourth.

IU South Bend was held to just one hit across five innings. Freshman Ella Chelminiak recorded the Titans' lone base knock, while the team's only run came in the fifth inning when Grace Swangin scored on a Madonna throwing error.

Game Two: Rochester Christian 16, IU South Bend 15 (8 innings)

Game two of the day for the Titans was a nail-biting thriller with incredible swings late in the game with a combined 23 runs in the final three frames.

The Titans struck first, building a 5-0 lead through four innings behind RBI swings from Savannah Hamilton and Reece Douglass. After extending the lead to 9-2 in the sixth, the momentum shifted dramatically.

Rochester Christian erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a two-run triple that tied the game at 9-9

IU South Bend responded immediately, looking to secure the win in the top of the seventh. The Titans plated two in the seventh, utilizing four singles to take control.

The Warriors were not done, though, finding the rally in the bottom of the seventh. Rochester Christian were busy on the base path and knotted the game at 11 to force extras.

In the eighth, IU South Bend appeared to seize control, exploding for four runs — including RBI hits from Grace Swangin, Jaylah Harlan and Mikayla La Bounty — to surge ahead 15-11. All four RBIs came with two outs, while Swangin and Cripe logged doubles.

Rochester Christian got the final word and found a way to overcome the big deficit. Five runs came in the bottom of the eighth, completing the comeback with a walk-off RBI single to hand the Titans a 16-15 defeat.

Chelminiak delivered a standout performance at the top of the lineup, going 4-for-4 with two triples and three runs scored. Swangin added three hits, while La Bounty drove in three runs. Douglass collected two doubles, and Hamilton and Elyse Starr each added key RBIs in the offensive outburst.

IUSB Softball will be back in Indiana next week, facing IU Southeast in a doubleheader on Friday at 2:00 pm.
