IUSB Battles in the Southeast

NEW ALBANY, Ind. --- IU South Bend battled in a tight opener before falling 4-3, then struggled to contain Indiana Southeast in an 8-0 defeat in game two Friday afternoon.

The Titans showed fight in the first contest, erasing an early deficit and threatening late, but ultimately could not complete the comeback.

Game One: IU Southeast 4, IU South Bend 3

IU Southeast struck first with a two-run homer in the opening frame, but the Titans answered and briefly took control midway through the game.

Cassi Reams got IU South Bend on the board in the second inning with an RBI triple to left, scoring Peyton Norman. In the fourth, the Titans capitalized on patience at the plate, drawing bases-loaded walks from Ella Chelminiak and Pailei Cripe to take a 3-2 lead.

The Grenadiers responded in the fifth with another two-run home run, swinging the momentum back in favor of the hosts and putting the Titans behind 4-3.

IU South Bend had its best opportunity to tie the game in the sixth. Grace Swangin singled to left and Chelminiak followed with a base hit to put the tying run in scoring position with two outs. However, the Titans were unable to deliver the equalizer and the one-run deficit held.

Norman finished 2-for-4 at the plate, while Chelminiak and Swangin each collected key hits in the narrow loss. Savannah Hamilton worked 4.1 innings in the circle before Jaylah Harlan closed out the final 1.2 frames.

Game Two: IU Southeast 8, IU South Bend 0

The nightcap saw Indiana Southeast capitalize early and steadily extend its advantage in an 8-0 decision.

The hosts plated two runs in the first inning on a pair of sacrifice flies and broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning. Indiana Southeast added insurance in the fifth to seal the sweep.

IU South Bend was limited to four hits in the contest. Chelminiak doubled, while Cripe, Hamilton and Norman each recorded base hits in the loss.

Norman offered a strong day at the plate for IUSB, nabbing three hits in six at bats.

The Titans will look to regroup next week, facing Grace at home on Saturday with game one starting at 1:00 pm.
