Titans Split Wild Doubleheader at Grace

WINONA LAKE, Ind. --- IU South Bend split a tightly contested doubleheader Saturday at Grace College, pulling out an 11-10 win in game two and dropping a 2-1 decision in game one.

Both games were decided by slim margins, and Elyse Starr proved to be the Titans' most steady presence in the circle across the afternoon.

Game One: Grace 2, IU South Bend 1

After a scoreless start, Grace broke through with two solo home runs in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead.

IU South Bend responded in the fourth when Douglass singled and later scored on a defensive miscue to cut the deficit in half. The Titans had opportunities late but could not find the equalizer, stranding runners in multiple innings.

Starr capped the game in the circle, tossing three scoreless to keep the Lancers from adding to their lead.

La Bounty recorded two hits in the loss, while Harlan tripled and Starr added a base knock as IU South Bend totaled six hits in the afternoon.

Game Two: IU South Bend 11, Grace 10

The two teams combined for 21 runs in the first four innings before both pitching staffs settled in and put up zeros the rest of the way.

IU South Bend struck first on a Savannah Hamilton sacrifice fly in the opening frame, but Grace answered with four runs in the bottom half aided by defensive miscues.

The Titans exploded for five runs in the second inning behind key hits from Mikayla La Bounty, Hamilton and Reece Douglass. Pailei Cripe added an RBI triple in the third, and Starr delivered a two-run double in the fourth as IU South Bend built an 11-4 advantage.

Grace stormed back with a six-run fourth inning to cut the deficit to one, but that would be the final offensive surge of the game.

From there, the Titans' pitching stabilized. Starr logged four strong innings in relief, allowing just one earned run while striking out four to earn the victory. Neither team scored over the final three frames as IU South Bend held on for the 11-10 win.

Hamilton finished with three hits and three RBIs, Douglass added two hits and two RBIs, and Cripe reached base five times while driving in two runs.
IUSB will head to Florida for its next round of competition beginning on March 14 in Melbourne, FL.
