Titans Lock Up No. 3 Seed With Dominant Defensive Win at Governors State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. --- IU South Bend closed out the regular season with a convincing defensive performance on the road Saturday afternoon, defeating Governors State 56-47. With the win, the Titans improved to 21-7 overall and 16-4 in the CCAC and will now host Viterbo on Tuesday in the conference quarterfinals, as the number three seed in the tournament.

From the start, defense dictated the afternoon. The Titans held the Jaguars to just eight first-quarter points, and the pressure intensified from there. In the second quarter alone, Governors State went 0-for-8 from three and endured a 10-shot drought to close the half, allowing IU South Bend to string together an 11-0 run to seize full control heading into the break.

The halftime score — 29-15 Titans — reflected one of IUSB's stingiest defensive halves of the season. Aubrie Booker and Tenleigh Phelps each sank triples in the run to boost the IUSB edge. GSU's final made field goal of the half came at the 4:52 mark, and the Jaguars made just 3-of-17 shots in the second quarter.

The lead swelled to 21 points early in the third when Keylee Hudson scored at 7:20 to make it 38-17, the Titans' largest advantage of the afternoon. Even when Governors State found rhythm later in the period, IU South Bend kept the margin comfortable, never allowing the Jaguars within double digits until the final minute.

Tenleigh Phelps delivered another standout performance with 23 points, seven rebounds, and four made threes. The senior played all 40 minutes, while matching her season-best of made threes.

Keylee Hudson added 11 points, hitting four of six shots from the field. Bradie Chambers contributed nine points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and three steals, controlling the game's tempo and breaking the Jaguars' pressure. Booker added eight points and six rebounds, while Kenzie Fulks offered a balanced line of five points, five rebounds, and two assists, while also providing defensive disruption at the point of attack.

The Titans held GSU to 12.5 percent from three (2-of-16) and 35 percent shooting overall, marking one of their best defensive outings against a winning conference opponent all season.

With the win, the Titans now turn their attention to postseason play, hosting sixth-seeded Viterbo on Tuesday in the CCAC quarterfinals at the Student Activities Center.
