A Tough Test, Titans Advance

SOUTH BEND --- In a postseason battle that lived up to the moment, No. 3 seed IU South Bend closed strong to defeat No. 6 Viterbo 71-65 in the CCAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday night at the Student Activities Center. The Titans rode clutch shooting, standout performances from their starters, and a decisive late-game surge to punch their ticket to the conference semifinals.

Tenleigh Phelps and Kenzie Fulks set the tone throughout, combining for 35 points as the Titans weathered several Viterbo runs. Phelps delivered 18 points and seven rebounds, knocking down four threes and making timely plays inside. Fulks powered the offense with 17 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, controlling tempo and repeatedly finding the right spots against Viterbo's defense.

IUSB carried a 37-35 halftime lead into the break after shooting a steady 47.1 percent in the second quarter, but their offense dropped off sharply in the third. The Titans shot just 15.4 percent (2-for-13) in the period.

On the other end, IUSB held it down defensively in the third. Both teams managed just 10 points in the quarter, as the visitors made just four field goals on 12 attempts. With a spot in the semifinals hanging in balance, the two teams entered the fourth quarter separated by two at 47-45.

With the season on the line, Booker and Hudson erupted.

Booker, who had scored only four points entering the quarter, delivered 10 points in the fourth, starting with a driving layup at the 6:00 mark to restore a cushion at 55-52. The lead for the Titans was within two possessions throughout the quarter, including two ties near the midway point.

Viterbo went to the line at the 1:23 mark and knocked down a pair of free throws to pull within one at 64-63. As the clock ticked past one minute left, the Titans made the big play. Phelps drove inside, before kicking it out to Fulks. Fulks made the extra pass to Booker and the sophomore sank the open look to put the team ahead by four.

With 12 seconds left, Hudson calmly knocked down both attempts at the charity stripe to respond to a Viterbo make and she added two more at the :04 mark to put the game out of reach.

Hudson, who also tallied 10 points in the fourth, repeatedly attacked downhill and finished through contact. She opened the quarter with a layup, later hit two more buckets in transition, and then clinched the victory at the free-throw line.

Chambers turned in another valuable all-around effort with eight points, eight rebounds, and six assists, and Booker finished with 14 points while hitting two of the biggest shots of the game.

With the win, IU South Bend advances to the CCAC Semifinals. The Titans will play host to No. 7 St. Ambrose on Thursday night in the Student Activities Center.
