Game Recap: Softball |

Back in Action from Florida

MELBOURNE, Fla. --- IU South Bend opened its spring break trip to the Space Coast Softball Complex with a split Saturday, riding a dominant pitching performance from Savannah Hamilton to a 2-0 win over Defiance before falling 9-2 to Lawrence Tech in the nightcap.

Game One: IU South Bend 2, Defiance 0

Hamilton set the tone for the Titans in Florida.

The junior right-hander tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out two over seven innings . She was in control throughout, retiring 14 straight batters from the final out of the first inning into the sixth and never allowing Defiance to mount a serious threat.

Offensively, IU South Bend found the difference early.

Pailei Cripe led off the game with a single and later stole second. After Grace Swangin reached on an error, the Titans capitalized. A wild pitch brought Cripe home, and a Peyton Norman sacrifice fly plated Swangin to give IU South Bend a 2-0 lead in the opening frame .

That would be all Hamilton needed.

The Titans finished with five hits compared to three for Defiance , with Cripe, Reece Douglass, Jaylah Harlan, Mikayla La Bounty and Ella Chelminiak each recording a base knock.

Hamilton worked efficiently, facing just 26 batters and stranding three runners in the seventh to seal the shutout victory .

Game Two: Lawrence Tech 9, IU South Bend 2

The second game of the day belonged to Lawrence Tech.

After trailing just 1-0 through four innings, the Blue Devils broke things open with a two-run fifth and a five-run sixth inning to pull away .

IU South Bend scattered six hits in the loss . Cripe collected two doubles, while Hamilton added two hits, including a triple. Mikayla La Bounty drove in a run in the seventh, and Ella Chelminiak recorded an RBI groundout in the sixth .

Cripe and La Bounty each logged a hit in each game on Saturday with Cripe going 3-7 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Titans will be back at it on Sunday, facing Johnson University in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 pm.
