Game Recap: Softball |

Busy Day in Florida

MELBOURNE, Fla. --- IU South Bend wrapped up a busy Tuesday at the Space Coast Softball Complex, dropping an extra-inning heartbreaker to Cottey College, edging Dallas Christian 5-4 in a tight contest, and concluding the day with a resumed game against Johnson (Tenn.) that resulted in a 12-3 defeat.

The Titans saw a ton of action on the field, battling for 17 and a half innings through the three contests.

Game One: Cottey 7, IU South Bend 5 (8 innings)

The day opened with a back-and-forth battle that required extra innings.

IU South Bend struck first in the opening frame when Peyton Norman grounded out to bring home Pailei Cripe . After Cottey answered with two runs in the third, the Titans surged ahead with a three-run third inning highlighted by two-out RBI singles from Reece Douglass and Ella Chelminiak.

Cottey regained momentum in the fifth with three runs to take a 5-4 lead, but IU South Bend answered again to extend the game. Savannah Hamilton capitalized on a Cassi Reams leadoff double to knot the game at five and ultimately force extras.

As the game transitioned to the eighth frame, Cottey quickly took advantage of its free runner on second base. A base knock scored one and another RBI hit gave Cottey College a 7-5 lead.

Unfortunately, the Titans were unable to match, going three-up, three-down in the bottom of the eighth to fall in Tuesday's opener.

Douglass paced the offense with three hits and two RBIs, while Hamilton added two hits and an RBI. Chelminiak also drove in two runs in the contest.

Game Two: IU South Bend 5, Dallas Christian 4

The Titans responded in game two with another narrow contest — this time finishing on the right side of the margin.

Dallas Christian jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead , but IU South Bend chipped away.

Peyton Norman's RBI single in the second cut the deficit to two . The Titans then broke through in the fourth inning. With the two outs and the bases loaded, Pailei Cripe worked an RBI walk before Savannah Hamilton followed with a two-run single to give IU South Bend a 4-3 advantage.

A Norman sacrifice fly in the fifth extended the lead to 5-3.

The final inning did not come without drama, as Dallas Christian pulled within one after a pair of hits. The tying run moved to third base but Hamilton closed the door, tossing a complete game and allowing four runs on seven hits to earn the win.

Hamilton helped her own cause at the plate with two hits and two RBIs, while Cripe added an RBI and Norman drove in two runs in the victory.

Game Three: Johnson (Tenn.) 12, IU South Bend 3

The final game of the day resumed from Sunday's suspended contest, which had been halted by a storm in the middle of the fifth inning with Johnson leading 8-3.

IU South Bend had originally built a 3-0 first-inning lead behind an RBI single from Norman and a two-run double from Jaylah Harlan . However, Johnson responded with two runs in the third and a six-run fifth inning on Sunday before play was stopped.

When action resumed Tuesday, Johnson picked up where it left off, adding four more runs across the sixth and seventh innings to complete the 12-3 decision.

Harlan finished with two RBIs, while Norman added a run-scoring single. The Titans totaled four hits in the resumed contest.

IU South Bend now turns its attention to its final day in Florida, facing New College of Florida on Wednesday at 10:00 am and 12:15 pm.
