Game Recap: Baseball |

Barnes’ Two Homers Not Enough in Comeback Effort

CHICAGO, Ill. --- IU South Bend showed fight throughout Saturday's doubleheader at Saint Xavier, doing most of its offensive damage in the late innings of both contests. Despite strong pushes down the stretch, the Titans could not overcome early deficits, falling 8-4 in game one and 11-9 in game two.

Game One: Late Push Falls Short, 8-4

Saint Xavier built an early advantage, plating runs in four of the first five innings to take control. The Titans struggled to generate offense early but continued to battle.

IU South Bend broke through in the seventh, capitalizing on pressure and defensive miscues to cut the deficit to 5-2. In the eighth, Clint Goodman launched a solo home run to left field, giving the Titans life once again.

The offense scratched across another run in the ninth on a Goodman RBI groundout, but the early damage proved too much to overcome in the 8-4 final.

Goodman finished 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, while Jayden Cummings added two hits in the contest.

Game Two: Barnes Powers Titans in 11-9 Slugfest

Saint Xavier struck early with two home runs in the first three innings to build a sizable 7-0 lead, but the Titans refused to fold.

Jack Barnes delivered a monster performance at the plate, blasting two home runs — a solo shot in the fourth and a three-run homer in the sixth — finishing with four RBIs.

Trailing 11-4 entering the seventh and final frame, IU South Bend erupted for five runs in the frame. RBI hits from Luis Turmero, a sacrifice fly from Clint Goodman, a run-scoring double from Josiah Nelson, and a two-RBI double from Nick Turner suddenly made it a two-run game at 11-9.

The Titans finished with nine runs on nine hits in the loss, showing resilience and the ability to score in bunches when the lineup gets rolling.

IU South Bend will hit the road on Tuesday for its next bout, facing IU Kokomo at 4:00 pm.
