Pitching Dominates in Saturday Sweep

NAPANEE, Ind. --- IU South Bend opened CCAC play in dominant fashion Saturday, sweeping Calumet College of St. Joseph with back-to-back shutouts. The Titans claimed a 5-0 victory in game one before closing the day with a 9-0 mercy-rule win in five innings.

The Titans began conference action in impressive fashion, scoring their fifth and sixth wins of the season.

Game One: IU South Bend 5, Calumet 0

The Titans set the tone early and never looked back in the conference opener.

IU South Bend plated three runs in the first inning. Pailei Cripe singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Reece Douglass. Ella Chelminiak's aggressive baserunning forced a throwing error that brought home Savannah Hamilton, and Jaylah Harlan followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0 .

The Titans added two more in the fourth behind RBI singles from Hamilton and Grace Swangin.

Hamilton was masterful in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout. She allowed just five hits, struck out eight, and did not allow a run over seven innings.

Cripe and Hamilton each collected two hits in the win as IU South Bend finished with eight hits overall.

Game Two: IU South Bend 9, Calumet 0 (5 innings)

Game two ended early thanks to an offensive surge and another dominant pitching performance.

IU South Bend erupted for four runs in the second inning, highlighted by Peyton Norman's two-run home run and a two-run single from Grace Swangin. The Titans followed with four more runs in the third, capitalizing on defensive miscues and timely hitting to stretch the lead to 8-0.

Chelminiak added a solo home run in the fourth to cap the scoring.

Jaylah Harlan earned the win in the circle, tossing five shutout innings while allowing five hits and striking out one.

Norman drove in two runs, Cassi Reams added two RBIs, and Chelminiak finished with two hits and three runs scored, including the homer.

IU South Bend will be right back at home on Tuesday, taking on Olivet Nazarene in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
