Titans Fall Twice in Saturday Set at St. Ambrose

DAVENPORT, Iowa --- Indiana South Bend closed its weekend series at St. Ambrose with a pair of losses Saturday, falling 12-8 in a high-scoring opener before dropping a 12-4 decision in game two.

Game One: St. Ambrose 12, IU South Bend 8

The opener featured offense from the first inning.

IU South Bend jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind a two-run double from Peyton Norman and an RBI reach from Ella Chelminiak. Elyse Starr added a hit to load the bases with two outs but the Bees found a way out of the jam to stop the bleeding.

After St. Ambrose answered with five runs in the second, the Titans battled back to tie the game at 5-5 in the fourth off singles from Grace Swangin and Reece Douglass.

But the Bees pulled away with a two-run fourth and a five-run fifth, capitalizing on defensive miscues to stretch the margin to 12-5.

IU South Bend kept competing late. Jaylah Harlan and Chelminiak each drove in runs in the sixth, and the Titans added another in the seventh to cut into the deficit.

The Titans finished with 13 hits in the loss, including three from Pailei Cripe and multi-hit efforts from Norman, Harlan, and Elyse Starr.

Game Two: St. Ambrose 12, IU South Bend 4

Game two followed a similar pattern, with early offense giving way to a decisive middle inning.

IU South Bend struck first in the opening frame when Jaylah Harlan drove in Pailei Cripe. After St. Ambrose responded with seven runs across the first two innings, the Titans continued to fight at the plate.

The fourth inning saw a bases loaded opportunity for the Titans with nobody out. Two groundouts brought home two runs but the frame was halted with IUSB still trailing, 7-3.

Peyton Norman kicked off the fifth with a single, before moving to third with the help of an SAU error. Chelminiak helped score her fellow freshman, lining a single to center field.

However, the Bees answered with a five-run fifth inning to create separation and bring the game to an end due to the eight-run rule.

Norman recorded two hits in game two, while Chelminiak added a pair of base knocks as part of a six-hit effort for the Titans.

The Titans are set to return to the field on Tuesday, hitting the road to face Trinity Christian in a doubleheader at 3:00 pm ET.
