Game Recap: Softball |

A Little Bit of Everything

SOUTH BEND --- After waiting out nearly three hours of a rain delay, IU South Bend finally took the field Wednesday evening against Trinity Christian — and wasted no time making up for it.

The Titans erupted for 11 runs in the second inning of game one en route to a 16-1 run-rule victory, before falling just short in a dramatic 6-5 loss in the nightcap.

Game One: IU South Bend 16, Trinity Christian 1 (5 innings)

The delay didn't cool off the Titans' bats.

In the second inning alone, IU South Bend sent 17 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs. The inning was highlighted by two three-run home runs from Ella Chelminiak. The freshman hit more home runs in that inning alone than she had hit the entire season prior to Wednesday. Starr also reached twice in the frame, while she and Jaylah Harlan each logged a double in the rally.

The Titans added insurance in the fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by a two-run double from Savannah Hamilton as part of a 16-run outburst on 11 hits.

Elyse Starr delivered a complete-game effort in the circle, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out four on the way to the win.

Game Two: Trinity Christian 6, IU South Bend 5

As the sun faded and game two commenced, Trinity Christian struck in the top of the first to set the pace.

The Titans answered with a crucial hit from Cassi Reames. With the bases loaded, the freshman landed a double that cleared the bases and put the Titans ahead, 3-1.

After the visitors knotted the game at three, IU South Bend stayed locked in at the plate. A walk and single put runners on in the fourth inning. Reece Douglass singled to left field and Savannah Hamilton rounded third looking to score. Hamilton beat the throw, despite a play at the plate for a 4-3 IUSB lead.

The game shifted again in the sixth. Trinity Christian plated three runs to take a 6-4 lead heading into the final inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Titans mounted one final push.

Jaylah Harlan and Reames reached to open the inning, and a wild pitch moved both into scoring position with no outs. Elyse Starr delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-5.

With two outs, IU South Bend loaded the bases — hoping for its third late grand slam in the last week. This time, the rally came up just short.

The Titans finished with 11 hits in the loss, including three from Reames and three from Douglass.

IUSB will now head to the final weekend of the regular season with a series against Viterbo beginning on the road on Saturday at 1:00 pm ET.
