No. 6 Titans Upset No. 3 St. Ambrose to Open CCAC Tournament

CROWN POINT, Ind. --- IU South Bend opened the CCAC Tournament with a statement win Wednesday afternoon, knocking off No. 3 seed St. Ambrose, 7-5, at the Crown Point Sports Complex.

Entering the tournament as the No. 6 seed, the Titans delivered in the late innings to secure their first victory over the Bees since 2024 — and their second-straight year opening conference tournament play with a win.

Game Recap: IU South Bend 7, St. Ambrose 5

St. Ambrose struck first in the opening inning, but the Titans responded.

IUSB found success on the back of a Peyton Norman leadoff double in the second frame. Elyse Starr drove in her freshman teammate with an RBI single to even the score. In the third, Norman and Grace Swangin delivered back-to-back RBI singles to give IU South Bend a 3-2 lead.

The Bees answered with a three-run fourth inning to reclaim a 5-3 advantage, but the Titans steadily chipped away.

In the fifth, Chelminiak scored on a passed ball before Swangin added another RBI single to tie the game at 5-5. Swangin brought home fellow senior Jade Baker, who laced a double to help the Titans rally.

Jaylah Harlan, who entered in relief, held St. Ambrose in check down the stretch and earned the win, allowing just one earned run across four innings.

IU South Bend took the lead for good in the sixth when Reece Douglass delivered an RBI single to score Harlan. In the seventh, Mikayla La Bounty added an insurance run with a two-out RBI single to push the margin to 7-5.

The Titans tallied 17 hits in the victory, with multi-hit performances from Savannah Hamilton (4-for-5), Swangin (3-for-4, 2 RBI), Harlan, Norman, and Chelminiak.

With the upset win, IU South Bend advanced in the CCAC Tournament and returned to action Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in Crown Point against No. 7 seed Trinity Christian in the second round. The winner will move on to play the winner of No. 1 Saint Xavier and No. 4 Olivet Nazarene, while the loser will drop to the elimination bracket to face the winner of No. 5 Viterbo and No. 8 Calumet.
