Game Recap: Baseball |

Knocking on the Door

DAVENPORT, Iowa --- IU South Bend (12-19, 7-8 CCAC) found itself in two tightly contested conference battles Friday afternoon but came up just short in both ends of a doubleheader at St. Ambrose (20-13, 15-5 CCAC). The Bees secured the sweep with a 2-1 win in a defensive nine-inning opener and a 5-3 victory in a seven-inning game two.

Game One: McCormick's Gem Spoiled Late

The opener was a classic pitchers' duel.

Senior right-hander Josh McCormick was impressive, tossing 8.1 innings while allowing just four hits and two runs, striking out six. McCormick kept the Bees off balance all afternoon and carried a 1-0 lead into the eighth.

IU South Bend broke through in the seventh when Jayden Cummings doubled and later scored on an RBI single from Lucas Brown.

St. Ambrose answered with a run in the eighth to tie the game, then pushed across the winning run in the ninth to claim the 2-1 decision.

Despite the loss, the Titans outhit SAU, 9-4, through the afternoon.

Game Two: Seventh-Inning Rally Comes Up Short

The second game, scheduled for seven innings, featured another competitive effort from the Titans.

St. Ambrose built an early advantage with three runs in the second inning and added two more in the fifth.

IU South Bend mounted a late push in the seventh. Sam Garner singled to start the rally, and Jayden Cummings followed with a run-scoring triple. Moments later, Luis Turmero lifted a sacrifice fly to bring the Titans within two.

Clint Goodman reached second with a double with two outs, bringing the tying run to the plate. Unfortunately, the Bees were able to record the final out and secure the 5-3 win.

Cummings and Barnes each laced two hits in the game, as the Titans once again posted more hits as a team, 9-6.

Lucky Teerman added a nice relief effort with 1.2 innings of work, recording all five outs in order with two strikeouts.

IU South Bend will have another chance at St. Ambrose on Saturday with another doubleheader at 2:00 pm.
