Walk-Off Ends Titans’ Upset Bid at St. Francis

JOLIET, Ill. --- Two homers brought the spark for IU South Bend (9-17, 5-6 CCAC) on Friday afternoon but the ending got away from the Titans. St. Francis (23-8, 9-1 CCAC) found the hit when it was needed and snuck away with a 3-2 win against IUSB.

IU South Bend generated nearly all of its offense via the long ball.

Peyton Norman opened the scoring in the third inning with a solo home run down the left-field line. After St. Francis evened the game later in the inning, Jaylah Harlan answered in the sixth with a solo shot to center field, reclaiming a 2-1 advantage. The long ball was the first of her career for the sophomore.

That slim lead held into the seventh.

Hamilton was sharp throughout, striking out five and allowing just two earned runs over 6.2 innings. She limited traffic and kept the Saints from generating sustained rallies.

But in the bottom of the seventh, St. Francis strung together a two-out single and a double — the Saints' only extra-base hit of the day — to plate the tying and winning runs.

The Titans finished with three hits, two of them leaving the yard, and showed discipline at the plate with six walks drawn against Saint pitching .

IU South Bend will now host a doubleheader against St. Francis on Monday at Newton Park beginning at 3:00 pm.
