Titans Open 2026 With Win Over Huntington, Split First Day of Forester Invite

HUNTINGTON, Ind. --- IU South Bend wasted little time putting its first win of the new season on the board.

The Titans opened the 2026 campaign Friday afternoon with a four-set victory over host Huntington, taking down the Foresters 25-22, 25-15, 19-25, 26-24 in their first match of the Forester Invite. IU South Bend returned to the court later in the day and was swept by St. Mary-of-the-Woods, 23-25, 16-25, 15-25, to split its opening-day matches.

The season-opening victory featured contributions throughout the lineup, but Kadence Brumitt made an immediate impact in her first match as a Titan. Brumitt put away a team-high 16 kills on .244 hitting, added 11 digs and was involved in three blocks. Emalee Maesch and Alyssa Carson supplied 12 kills apiece, giving IU South Bend three attackers in double figures.

The Titans had to work their way into the opener after Huntington built an 11-7 advantage in the first set. IU South Bend gradually erased the deficit, pulling even at 18 before the teams traded points deep into the frame. With the score knotted at 21, Carson delivered a kill and Emily Adams followed with an ace. Huntington briefly cut the margin to 23-22, but the Titans claimed the final two points for a 25-22 win.

IU South Bend found another gear in the second.

After the game sat even at 8-8, the Titans rattled off five-consecutive points. Brumitt, Kendall Gerdes and Jillian Bruckner found the floor during the surge, while Maesch added an ace to create a 13-8 advantage. Later, Mia Norris helped ignite another run as Maesch and Brumitt combined for four consecutive kills, and IUSB pulled away for a 25-15 victory. The Titans hit .333 with 17 kills in the frame, their most efficient set of the day.

Huntington responded in the third, breaking away from a competitive opening stretch to take the set 25-19 and force a fourth.

That fourth set provided the drama.

The Foresters appeared poised to extend the match after turning a 15-15 tie into an 18-15 lead and later moving in front 22-19. IU South Bend answered. Three straight Huntington errors brought the Titans even at 22 before the teams traded the next four points. Huntington then reached set point at 24-23, putting IUSB one rally away from a fifth set.

Brumitt took over from there.

The sophomore delivered a kill to erase match point, then struck again to give IU South Bend a 25-24 advantage. Maesch finished the comeback on the next rally, putting away the final ball from the back row to give the Titans a 26-24 win and a season-opening victory.

The offense wasn't the only bright spot. Adams stepped into a major role in the back row and piled up 29 digs, while double-double performances came in from Maesch who added 16 and Brumitt who collected 11. Norris handed out 27 assists, with Mallorie Elliott adding 14, as IUSB finished with 48 kills and nine service aces.

IU South Bend's second match presented a different challenge.

St. Mary-of-the-Woods earned a 25-23, 25-16, 25-15 sweep, but the Titans nearly stole the opening set after fighting back from an early deficit. IUSB trailed 14-11 before Elliott went to the service line and helped fuel a four-point surge. Two blocks involving Kendall Gerdes and Bruckner, an Elliott ace and a St. Mary-of-the-Woods attack error pushed the Titans in front 16-14.

The Pomeroys recovered to move ahead 21-17, but IU South Bend continued to hang around before St. Mary-of-the-Woods eventually escaped the opening frame. The Pomeroys then controlled larger portions of the final two sets to finish the sweep, hitting .242 for the match compared with IUSB's .120.

Carson provided the most consistent offensive production for the Titans in match two, collecting nine kills on .238 hitting. Brumitt followed with eight kills, while Maesch finished with five. Gerdes made the most of her opportunities with two kills on three swings and was involved in three blocks. Ari Short paced the back row with 10 digs, and Norris finished with 19 assists.

Carson's afternoon was particularly encouraging after her breakout freshman campaign. Across the two matches, she totaled 21 kills, including 12 in the season-opening victory and nine more against St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Brumitt's debut also produced 24 kills over seven sets.

The Titans will continue in the Foresters Invite on Saturday, facing Wilberforce at 12:00 pm and IU Columbus at 2:00 pm.
