IU South Bend and Bethel Go Toe-to-Toe in 2026 Opener

SOUTH BEND --- The Indiana University South Bend women's soccer team opened the 2026 season with a hard-fought battle against local foe Bethel University on Saturday at Newton Park. The Titans erased a second-half deficit on a goal from Katie Coleman, but the Pilots answered three minutes later to escape with a 2-1 victory.

The two sides were evenly matched throughout the afternoon, with IU South Bend finishing with a 15-14 advantage in shots. The Titans put 11 attempts on frame while Bethel recorded 10.

Neither side could find a breakthrough during a defensive first half. Mikayla Saunders, making her first appearance in goal for the Titans, kept the Pilots off the board, while IU South Bend created chances of its own. Olivia Enyeart put an attempt on target in the 20th minute, and Emma Martin nearly opened the scoring late in the half before her shot was kept out by a defensive save.

The scoreless battle continued deep into the second half before Bethel finally broke through in the 68th minute.

IU South Bend responded by ramping up the pressure immediately. Enyeart came inches away from an equalizer in the 72nd minute when her free kick struck the crossbar, then forced another save less than a minute later.

The Titans' persistence paid off with just over 11 minutes remaining. Enyeart played a perfectly weighted lead ball ahead to Coleman, who made a strong run behind the Bethel defense and beat the goalkeeper to the near post to level the match at 1-1 in the 79th minute. The goal was Coleman's first of the season, with Enyeart collecting the assist.

Bethel was not done though, finding another opening  in the 83rd minute. The visitors struck again to take a 2-1 lead in the final stretch. The Titans continued searching for another equalizer, putting two more shots on goal over the final five minutes, but Bethel kept both out.

Enyeart led the IU South Bend attack with seven shots, four on goal and an assist, while Coleman recorded the Titans' lone goal. Saunders made seven saves in her collegiate debut. Enyeart, Gallegos, Mia Hoffman-Buczek and Saunders each played the full 90 minutes.

Saturday also marked the first appearance in the Crimson and Cream for Saunders, Martin, Genevieve Smith, Kara Manriquez, Lila Hanyzewski, Myalise Ortega and Reagan Archuleta as the Titans began a new campaign at Newton Park.

IU South Bend will hit the road for its next contest, facing Huntington on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.
