Senior Day Showdown Goes Down to the Wire

SOUTH BEND --- Two Titan seniors Yuritzi Alvarez and Aryanna Allen were honored on Saturday afternoon before battling Goshen College in a tightly contested match at Newton Park. The Titans created several quality opportunities throughout the afternoon, but a second-half strike from the Maple Leafs proved to be the difference in a 1-0 Goshen victory.

The two sides traded chances from the opening whistle. Allen nearly gave the Titans a dream start to Senior Day, putting a shot on goal just 36 seconds into the contest. Audrey Campbell followed with another attempt on frame in the sixth minute, while goalkeeper Mikayla Saunders answered with several early saves at the other end.

IU South Bend had one of its best opportunities of the opening half in the 21st minute when Olivia Enyeart stepped to the penalty spot, but Goshen goalkeeper Hailey Ballast made the save to keep the match scoreless. Reagan Archuleta, Emma Martin and Katie Coleman also put shots on target during the first half as the Titans continued to pressure the Maple Leafs' back line.

The back-and-forth battle continued after halftime. Myalise Ortega forced another save less than three minutes into the second half before Yulissa Gallegos came inches from putting IU South Bend in front in the 51st minute, sending an attempt off the crossbar.

Goshen finally broke through in the 55th minute. Eliana Lang took a long-range look that sailed just over Saunders and underneath the crossbar to give the Maple Leafs a 1-0 advantage.

The Titans continued to search for the equalizer. Enyeart forced a save in the 61st minute, while Gallegos produced two more attempts later in the half, including a shot on goal in the 73rd minute. IU South Bend continued pushing forward into the closing minutes but could not find the finishing touch.

The final numbers reflected the competitive nature of the match. Goshen held an 18-14 edge in total shots, but IU South Bend put 10 shots on goal and forced Ballast to make 10 saves. Saunders turned away eight shots for the Titans.

Enyeart led IU South Bend with three shots, all on goal, while Gallegos added three attempts and Coleman recorded two. Allen, Martin, Campbell, Ortega and Archuleta also registered shots on frame as the Titans received contributions throughout the lineup.

Saunders, Gallegos, Mia Hoffman-Buczek and Enyeart each played the full 90 minutes for IU South Bend. Saturday's contest also gave the Titans an opportunity to recognize Alvarez and Allen for their contributions to the program as part of Senior Day festivities at Newton Park.

The Titans will now begin a seven-match road trip on Thursday at 7:00 pm against Saint Mary's.
