Four-Set Fight for IU South Bend

SOUTH BEND --- IU South Bend found its stride in the third set on Tuesday night, pushing unbeaten-in-conference Olivet Nazarene before the Tigers found a late answer.

The Titans took the third set and carried that momentum deep into the fourth, but Olivet Nazarene rallied late to secure a 28-26, 25-17, 20-25, 25-22 victory inside the Student Activities Center. IUSB moved to 6-12 overall and 2-2 in CCAC play.

Tuesday's opener immediately showed how little separated the two sides. IU South Bend erased a 22-18 deficit and fought off multiple set points, pulling even at 24, 25 and 26. Olivet Nazarene eventually claimed the final two rallies for the 28-26 decision before carrying the momentum into a 25-17 second-set win.

The Titans found a different gear in the third.

IUSB built an early 8-3 advantage and later turned a 13-12 lead into a commanding 21-14 cushion. Kate Dole, Alyssa Carson and Emalee Maesch all contributed during the run as the Titans produced their best offensive set of the evening. IU South Bend hit .222 while holding Olivet Nazarene to just .051, finishing off the frame 25-20 to extend the match.

That rhythm followed IUSB into the fourth. A pair of Olivia Ringer aces helped the Titans build separation, and Carson later pushed the advantage to 19-15. IU South Bend still held a 21-17 lead with the match appearing headed toward a fifth set.

Olivet Nazarene responded with four consecutive points to tie the frame at 21. Kadence Brumitt briefly stopped the run with a kill that put IUSB back in front, 22-21, but the Tigers answered with the final four points to close the match. From the Titans' 21-17 advantage, Olivet Nazarene scored eight of the final nine points.

Mia Norris handed out 21 assists, Brynn Lake added 15 assists and three kills on four swings, and Ringer finished with a match-high three service aces. IU South Bend totaled 44 kills and six aces while forcing Olivet Nazarene into 27 attacking errors.

Brumitt once again supplied plenty of production on both sides of the net, finishing with a team-high 12 kills and 17 digs. The performance gave her a fifth consecutive double-double and fifth straight match with double-digit kills.

Carson joined her with a double-double of 10 kills and 13 digs, while also recording two solo blocks. Dole was the Titans' most efficient attacker, putting away six kills without an error on 12 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage and adding two solo blocks and a block assist. Maesch chipped in eight kills and 10 digs.


IU South Bend will look to bounce back on Thursday, rounding out its four-match homestand against Mount Mary at 7:00 pm.
