Mike Huling joins the IU South Bend baseball coaching staff in the 2015-16 season for his first year with the Titans. He will be responsible for coaching the hitting, infield, and base running for the Titans.
Huling came to IU South Bend from fellow Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference member Holy Cross College where he served as the Saints hitting, outfield, and base running coach for one season (2014-15). During the 2015 campaign, Huling helped guide the Saints to a 31-21 overall record, making an appearance in the CCAC conference tournament, and finishing 2nd in the CCAC South Division. The Saints hitters finished the regular season as the conference’s top hitting club, hitting .315 under Huling. Holy Cross finished in the top two among the 13 CCAC teams in nine major offensive categories (BA, SLG PCT, OBP, RS, RBI, HR, 2B, SB).
Before his time at Holy Cross, Huling came from Bowling Green State University in the Mid-American Conference where he served as a baseball assistant coach for two years. At BGSU, Huling mentored four All-MAC selections and been part of the 2013 Mid-American Conference Tournament champion and NCAA Regional team.
Serving as the primary hitting coach for the majority of the 2014 season, the Falcon offense saw a transformation during the second half of the 2014 season, under the tutelage of Huling. The Falcons raised their season batting average from .266 to .286 under Huling, while increasing offensive productivity, as well.
Most impressive was Bowling Green’s knack for stealing bases during the second half of the season. The Falcons, after stealing just 20 bases through the first 22 games of the season, stole 56 bases over the final 30 games (19-11 record).
Huling graduated in 2011 from the University of Southern Indiana, where he played for two seasons. His 2010 team at USI won the NCAA Division II National Championship. In his two seasons, Huling batted .342. In 2010, the year USI claimed the National Championship, Huling led the team with a .387 batting average with 49 RBI. Prior to his time at USI, Huling also played at Glen Oaks Community College, where batted .374.
