Titans hold off Jaguars for road victory

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – Katie Gard's 20 points led IU South Bend on Monday night, as the Titans battled for a 60-50 road win at Governors State.

Gard was the only player in double figures for the Titans (22-6, 15-5 CCAC), in a stop-and-start game that featured 41 personal fouls combined between both teams. Rachael Robards nearly earned a double-double, with a game-high 12 rebounds and nine points. Emma Fisher tallied eight points and eight boards in the win.

The Titans nearly shut out the home team in the first quarter, holding the Jaguars (9-18, 8-12 CCAC) scoreless until the 3:03 mark of the opening period. IUSB would take a 20-2 lead by the end of the first quarter, led by nine points from Gard.

Following a pair of free throws from Robards that put the Titans up 24-4, the Jaguars responded, going on a 14-2 run that closed the deficit to 26-18 with 2:01 left in the first half. IUSB would take a seven-point advantage into the break, 28-21.

IU South Bend stepped up the defense again in the third quarter, holding the Jaguars to just six points and reclaiming a double-digit lead. Robards' jumper at the 4:10 mark started a 6-0 run for the Titans, who went up 38-23 with just under three minutes left in the period.

Governors State made one final push early in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead down to nine, 40-31 with 8:51 remaining. The Titans responded with a 10-2 run, pulling away on a pair of free throws from Gard to go up 50-33 with 6:27 left to play.

The Titans now face their last road trip of the regular season, when they head to IU Northwest on Wednesday night. Tipoff with the Redhawks is set for 6:30 pm ET on February 16.
