IU South Bend defeats IU Kokomo by 40 to begin the season

SOUTH BEND, Ind.- The Indiana University South Bend Titans (1-0, 0-0 CCAC) defeated the IU Kokomo Cougars (0-1, 0-0 RSC) by a final score of 80-40 to begin the 2023-2024 season. 

The IU South Bend Titans offense featured three different Titans to score double digits, led by Tenleigh Phelps who finished with a game high of 25 points in her Titan debut. 

Phelps' 25 points came on a team high 64% shooting from the field while also knocking down six of the seven free throws she attempted. Phelps also recorded four rebounds, two assists, and two steals to cap off the season debut. 

Next in line in scoring for the Titans was senior guard Katie Gard who finished with 22 points. 

Gard's 22 points came on eight of thirteen shooting from the field while also shooting an impressive 80% from behind the three point line. Gard rounded out her stat line by recording five rebounds, one assist, and one steal while playing in a team high 26 minutes. 

The last Titan to record double digits was senior guard Maddie Gard who finished with 19 points. 

Gard's 19 points came on nine of sixteen shooting from the field, making her one of three Titans to shoot better than 50% in the victory. Gard also recorded six rebounds, three assists, and a steal in the win. 

Senior guard Emma Fisher finished just two rebounds and assists shy of reaching double-double status by leading the team in both categories with eight assists and eight rebounds. 

The Indiana University South Bend Titans return to action on Wednesday, November 1st, when they travel to Grand Rapids, Mich., to take on Aquinas College at 5:30 PM.
