Titans take doubleheader over Trinity International, sweep season series

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Indiana University South Bend Titans (9-16, 5-3 CCAC) defeated the Trinity International University Trojans (11-14, 1-7 CCAC) in both games of a doubleheader by scores of 12-4 and 8-1. Sunday's victories improve the Titans conference record to two games over .500, moving them into sole possession of third place in the CCAC. 

Game 1

Senior left handed pitcher Sam Hinshaw started on the mound for the Titans, allowing just two hits in two innings of shutout baseball. 

Bryson Taylor relieved Hinshaw in the third inning, Taylor allowed three runs on three hits while walking two but ultimately escapeing a bases loaded jam to limit the Trinity International scoring.

Junior right hander Jake McKendry relieved Taylor in the fourth, pitching four innings of one run baseball while allowing just one hits and striking out two Trojans on his way to his first win of the season.

Offensively, left fielder Gabe Cortez got the Titans on the board in the bottom of the second with a double that plated Brett Sikorski to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. 

Kole Miller began his 3-4 game one with a third inning triple that scored Owen Benson. Miller scored two runs in game one and finished just a homerun away from hitting for the cycle. 

A Brenden Bell RBI single, an Anthony Pohl RBI groundout, and a Brett Sikorski RBI double led to three more IU South Bend runs, giving the Titans a 5-3 lead through three innings of play.

The Titans plated six more runs in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of RBI singles by Owen Benson and Brenden Bell, bases loaded walks by Brett Sikorski and Gabe Cortez, and RBI ground outs by Logan Smith and Jake VanderWoude to extend the IU South Bend lead to 11-3 through four innings. 

Anthony Pohl's sixth inning solo homerun concluded the Titans scoring as they were victorious in game one by a score of 12-4.

Game 2

Senior right handed pitcher Payton Carney started on the mound in game two, pitching two innings of shutout baseball while allowing just one hit and striking one in his start.

Junior southpaw Josh Chajet relieved Carney, pitching one scoreless frame while only allowing one hit and striking out one TIU Trojan. With just one hit allowed in Sunday's game two, Chajet now has four consecutive appearances allowing one hit or fewer. 

Senior Alex Babbitt relieved Chajet and had his best outing of the season, pitching a season high five innings without allowing an earned run and also striking out a season high five hitters on the way to his first save of the season. 

Offensively, designated hitter Kaleb Farnham got the Titans on the board in the third inning with an RBI double that scored Kole Miller. Farnham finished the doubleheader with three doubles and eight total bases. 

Brenden Bell scored on a passed ball to extend the IU South Bend lead to 2-0 through three innings of play.

Brenden Bell's bases clearing three RBI double broke the game open for the Titans, extending their lead to 5-0 in game two. 

Second basemen Jake VanderWoude singled in the seventh inning, plating Coby Campbell and extending the Titans lead to 6-1.

Center fielder Owen Benson topped off his 4-5 day at the plate with a 2 RBI single in the bottom of the seventh that concluded the Titans scoring as they went out to win by a final score of 8-1.

Game two was called due to lightning in the bottom of the eighth.

The Indiana University South Bend Titans return to action on Tuesday, March 28th, when they host Judson University at 3:00 PM at Rex Weade Stadium, looking for the series win over the Eagles.
