Volleyball Battles No. 16 Viterbo

IU South Bend pushed Viterbo to the brink in set two but could not overcome the V-Hawks on Saturday.

LACROSSE, Wis. --- Saturday afternoon saw a matchup between the IU South Bend Titans (5-16, 1-6 CCAC) and the No. 16 Viterbo V-Hawks (14-5, 8-0 CCAC). The contest went the way of the hosting V-Hawks, as the Titans fell on the road in straight sets (25-13, 26-24, 25-15) to the nationally ranked Viterbo squad.

IU South Bend landed 27 kills on the day with its best set coming in number two with 11 kills. Emalee Maesch and Alyssa Carson led the way, posting seven kills apiece and they were followed closely by Kimora Gorman, who nabbed six kills.

One of the team's four aces on Saturday came early in the first set, as Maesch scored on her serve to help IUSB to a lead. Viterbo inched back ahead, before taking control with a 12-3 run. The host squad maintained the lead through the final point for a 25-13 finish.

The Titans responded with a strong start in set two. Maesch and Gorman pushed the team forward with two kills apiece in a 10-4 start. Viterbo found its rhythm again and quickly closed the gap for a tightly contested set. 10 ties and six lead changes dictated a balanced battle, as extra points were needed. IUSB denied two set point opportunities from the V-Hawks to create the 24-24 tie. Unfortunately, Viterbo found the edge, grabbing the next two points for a 26-24 set two win for the V-Hawks. The final set saw Viterbo hold control throughout to finish the sweep.

Brynn Lake organized the offense as the setter, dishing out 18 assists. She also tacked on two aces to her Saturday performance.

On defense, Sydney Hanna covered the back row with 14 digs, while Gorman and Kendall Gerdes helped defend the net, taking part in two blocks each.

The Titans will be back in action on the road at Judson on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
