Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Kentucky Christian

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. - After some threatening weather canceled the originally scheduled weekend series with Missouri Valley College the Indiana University South Bend Baseball Team (2-4, 0-0 CCAC) ended up traveling to Prestonsburg, Kentucky to face Kentucky Christian University (5-1, 0-0 Conf.). The Titans split the Friday doubleheader winning game one 2-1 and losing game two 5-2.

Game 1 (W 2-1)
The Titans won game one 2-1 behind masterful pitching from Sophomore Josh Vis and Junior Josh McCormick and the clutch hitting of Senior Gabe Cortez. Early on both teams were trading scoreless innings until the bottom of the third when KCU hit a solo home run. That was the only scoring of the game until the Titan offense came to life in their final opportunity of the game. In the top of the seventh inning Senior Braedon Leathed jump started the offense with a lead off double, Senior Jack Ryan immediately followed it up with a RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. After a sacrifice bunt and a groundout the Titans were down to their last out bringing Gabe Cortez to the plate. Cortez came in the clutch hitting a double to right center field to give the Titans a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. KCU had a runner in scoring position with two outs but McCormick called game inducing a game ending ground out. McCormick picked up the win in his 5.0 innings of relief only allowing one run and striking out one. Vis started the game throwing 2.0 innings allowing no runs on one hit and also striking out one.

Game 2 (L 5-2)
A four run fourth inning surged the Knights of KCU to a 5-2 victory in game two of the doubleheader. Junior Max Lines started the game for the Titans throwing a scoreless first inning, his second inning of work saw some traffic only recording one out and allowing one run before he gave way to Junior Connor Roark with the bases loaded. Roark induced a sacrifice fly and a two run double before the inning was finished with the Knights leading 4-0. IUSB's offense responded with one run in the top of the third but couldn't muster much more. Senior Gabe Cortez took the mound in the third inning throwing the rest of the game for the Titan pitching staff. His final line was 4.0 innings, two hits, one run, with four strikeouts. The Titans only scored one more run for the rest of the game on a sacrifice fly from Senior Jack Ryan in the seventh inning but Senior Breadon Leathed was thrown out trying to steal second base to end the game later in the inning.

The Titans move to a 2-4 record with the doubleheader split. Baseball returns to action late next weekend on February, 23rd and 24th in Henderson, TN when they go down to the Mid South Clash on Freed Hardeman University's campus. The Titans will play IU Kokomo and University of Northwestern Ohio on Sunday February 23rd and Freed Hardeman University  for a doubleheader on Monday February 24th.
