Jack Ryan leads offense to weekend sweep of St. Francis

South Bend, Ind. - The Indiana University South Bend (20-26, 15-13 CCAC) baseball team swept their weekend Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference series with the University of St. Francis (IL) (19-25, 15-13 CCAC) with an outpouring of runs from the offense, fueled by Senior Jack Ryan's remarkable weekend at the plate. The Titans won both games of day one on the road at USF taking game one 10-6 and game two 10-8. Day two the Titans played host at Four Winds Field, home of the South Bend Cubs, winning game one 15-5 and game two 14-6.

Game 1 (W 10-6)
The Titans got behind early in the game allowing three runs in the bottom of the first inning, finding themselves in a 3-0 hole out the gate. The Titan offense responded with two runs in the top of the second inning on a Clint Goodman RBI triple and a Nick Turner RBI sacrifice fly, making the score 3-2. The Titans took the lead 4-3 in the top of the third inning on a Jack Ryan RBI double and a Joe Jefferson RBI sacrifice fly. USF rallied to score three runs and regain the lead 6-4 in the bottom of the third inning. The Titans kept the offense rolling scoring four runs in the top of the fourth inning on a Jack Ryan three RBI home run, and a Gabe Cortez RBI single. The Titans would extend their lead with two more runs in the sixth inning on a RBI sacrifice from both Gabe Cortez and Quinn Meier. Jack Ryan led the offense going two-for-three with a double, a home run, and four RBI's while scoring three runs. Josh McCormick picked up the win in relief throwing the final five innings of the game giving up three runs on four hits and five strikeouts.

Game 2 (W 10-8)
USF once again got out to an early lead in game two scoring four runs in the second inning, chasing starting pitcher Andrew Parker out of the game turning it over to the bullpen early. The Titans responded with two runs in the top of the third inning on a Jack Ryan two run home run, bringing the Titans within two. The IUSB offense inched closer to USF with a run in the fourth inning on a Clint Goodman RBI double. The Saints got the run back in the bottom of the fourth inning extending their lead to 5-3 through four innings. In the sixth inning the Titans scored three runs, tying the game on a Nick Turner sacrifice bunt that was thrown away by the USF defense allowing two runs to score and Turner to move all the way up to third base. Lucas Brown gave the Titans the lead with a RBI sacrifice fly. The Saints tied the game back up with sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth, and took the lead again with another run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the Titans threatening and down a run in the eighth inning Jack Ryan hit a towering grand slam to right field giving the Titans a 10-7 lead late in the game. USF was able to score a run in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 10-8 game going into the last inning, but Jack Kienzle shut the door in the ninth inning for his fourth save of the season. Jack Ryan ended the game going two-for-four with two home runs and six RBI's, Clint Goodman was also three-for-five with a double and a RBI. Alex Marshall and Aaron Boyer minimized damage out of the bullpen for the Titans with Marshall throwing 3.2 innings giving up two runs on five hits and one strikeout, while Boyer threw 2.2 innings giving up two runs on three hits and one strikeout.

Game 3 (W 15-5)
On day two the Titans hosted USF at Four Winds Field, home of the South Bend Cubs for the final two games of the weekend series. Game three started with a similar feeling for the Titans as USF scored a run in the top of the first inning to get out to a quick 1-0 lead. This time the Titan offense responded in a big way scoring nine runs in the bottom of the first inning sending 12 hitters to the plate and notching eight hits in the inning. The inning was highlighted by a Braedon Leathed two RBI double, which was immediately followed up by a Jack Ryan three run home run. IUSB extended their lead with three more runs in the fourth inning on a Gabe Cortez RBI single and a Clint Goodman two RBI single giving the Titans a 12-1 cushion. USF added four runs in the fifth inning chasing starting pitcher Gabe Cortez out of the game, but the Titans responded right away with a RBI sacrifice fly from Jack Ryan to make a 13-5 game in favor of the Titans. IUSB didn't stop there as they added two more runs in the sixth inning on a Jack Ryan two RBI single. Cade Van Ness closed out the game with scoreless seventh inning, giving the Titans a 15-5 win in game one of the day. Starting pitcher Gabe Cortez threw 4.2 innings giving up five runs on eights and two strikeouts. Logan Vandermark picked up the win in relief ending a USF threat in the fifth inning and throwing a clean sixth inning, his final line was 1.1 innings giving up no runs on no hits and one strikeout. Jack Ryan ended the game going four-for-four with a home run and six RBI's, while Braedon Leathed went five-for-five with a double, a triple, and two RBI's.

Game 4 (W 14-6)
In the final game of the series the Titans figured they would switch things up scoring first with a run in the bottom of the first inning on a Kaleb Farnham RBI ground out getting out to an early 1-0 lead. The Titans added four more runs in the bottom of the second inning on a Josiah Nelson RBI single and a Jack Ryan three RBI double to take the lead 5-0. USF responded with two runs in the top of the third to get back in the game, but the Titans once again kept the bats rolling scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning on a Josiah Nelson RBI single, a Lucas Brown RBI double, and a Braedon Leathed two RBI double. With IUSB up 9-2 the Saints of USF inched their way back into the game scoring three runs to get with four. Both teams were held scoreless until the Titan offense got back to work in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring five runs to take a 14-5 lead. The Titans scored their runs in the big inning on a wild pitch that brought Evan Fortson home, a Lucas Brown RBI single, a Jack Ryan two RBI double, and a USF error that scored a run. USF etched a run in the top of the ninth inning, but it was too little too late as the Titans had ran away with the game, sweeping the series with a game four win 14-6. Riley Thomas picked up the win throwing 6.1 innings giving up five runs, three earned, on six hits and four strikeouts. The Titans had five players with multi-hit games in Braedon Leathed, Jack Ryan, Clint Goodman, Josiah Nelson, and Lucas Brown. The leader for the offense was Jack Ryan who was two-for-five with two doubles and five RBI's.

Jack Ryan had an eye popping weekend going 10-for-16 at the plate driving in 21 runs on three doubles and four home runs while scoring nine runs. The Titans return to action next week Friday April 25th at 2pm ET when they travel to Judson University (24-19, 16-10 CCAC) for the first day of their final CCAC series of the season. Day two will be hosted at Rex Weade Stadium at 1pm on Saturday April 26th as it will also be senior day.
