Clutch Fifth Set Lifts IUSB Past Calumet

WHITING, Ind. --- IU South Bend saved its cleanest volleyball for the moment it mattered most Thursday night.

After four sets filled with wide swings in momentum, the Titans took control immediately in the fifth and finished off Calumet with a 21-25, 25-21, 25-12, 12-25, 15-6 victory. The road win pushed IUSB to 8-13 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

The first four frames never settled into much of a rhythm. Calumet grabbed the opener, IUSB responded by taking the next two and then the Crimson Wave answered with a lopsided fourth to force a deciding set.

The Titans' best stretch before the fifth came in set three. IUSB put down 17 kills and hit .419, while limiting Calumet to a negative attack percentage in a 25-12 win. The fourth went completely the other direction, leaving the match to be decided in a race to 15.

IU South Bend made sure that race did not stay close for long.

Alyssa Carson and Kadence Brumitt opened the fifth with consecutive kills, helping the Titans bolt out to a 7-1 lead. Carson landed three kills during the early surge, while Bree Lake added another and teamed with Carson on a block.

From there, IUSB stayed in control. Emalee Maesch added two kills, Brumitt struck again and Kendall Gerdes contributed late before Emily Adams ended the night with a service ace. The Titans hit .533 in the fifth set, committing just one attacking error while holding Calumet to .067.

A big part of the offensive rhythm came from Brynn Lake, who handled the bulk of the setting duties and finished with 39 assists and six digs. Her distribution helped IUSB produce 54 kills and three players with double-digit totals.

On the defensive side, Adams turned in one of her stronger performances of the season. The junior libero collected a match-high 24 digs, giving the Titans a steady presence in the back row throughout the five-set battle. She also added the match-ending ace in the fifth.

Carson and Maesch paced the attack with 14 kills apiece. Carson added 10 digs and three total blocks for a double-double, while Maesch hit .314 and finished with 11 digs for one of her own.

Brumitt gave IUSB a third double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs, while also making a major impact from the service line with a match-high five aces.

Gerdes provided an efficient spark when called upon, converting six of seven attacks without an error for an .857 hitting percentage. Kate Dole added five kills and two block assists, while Bree Lake chipped in two kills and a block assist.

IU South Bend will continue CCAC play on Tuesday, hosting IU Northwest at 7:00 pm.
