IUSB Honors Seniors, Secures No. 4 Seed in CCAC Tournament

SOUTH BEND --- IU South Bend celebrated Jillian Bruckner and Brynn Lake on Senior Day Tuesday night before battling Governors State in its final home match of the regular season.

The Titans grabbed the second set but could not build enough momentum around it, falling to the Jaguars 22-25, 25-21, 18-25, 14-25 inside the Student Activities Center.

Despite the result, IU South Bend leaves the night with its postseason position secured. The Titans have locked up the No. 4 seed in the upcoming CCAC Tournament, earning the right to host an opening-round matchup next week.

Governors State controlled much of the opening set before IUSB made a late charge. Trailing 24-17, the Titans rattled off five consecutive points behind kills from Alyssa Carson and Emalee Maesch, along with a Kadence Brumitt service ace. The rally brought IUSB within 24-22 before the Jaguars finally closed out the frame.

IU South Bend carried that fight into the second set and produced its best stretch of the night. The Titans turned an early 4-2 deficit into an 8-4 advantage and remained in front through much of the frame. Governors State eventually pulled even at 20, but IUSB answered with a strong finish.

Carson delivered a kill to make it 21-20 before teaming with Brynn Lake and Kendall Gerdes to help the Titans create separation. Brumitt supplied the final two kills as IUSB took the set, 25-21, and evened the match.

Governors State regained control from there, pulling away late in the third before taking the fourth to finish the match.

Carson led the Titan attack with 15 kills on 34 swings, hitting .294 while adding eight digs and three total blocks. Maesch was right behind with 14 kills and eight digs, giving IUSB two attackers in double figures.

On her Senior Day, Lake directed the offense with a season-high 38 assists while adding eight digs, two kills and a service ace. She helped the Titans finish with 48 kills across the four-set match.

Brumitt provided the biggest number defensively, collecting a match-high 24 digs to go with three kills and an ace. Emily Adams and Carson each added eight digs, while Ari Short finished with six.

Bruckner also saw action during her Senior Day match, appearing in two sets and collecting three digs as the Titans honored her collegiate career.

IU South Bend now sits at 14-17 overall and 10-7 in conference play with one regular-season contest remaining. The Titans travel to IU Northwest on Thursday for a 6:30 pm first serve before returning home next week as the No. 4 seed in the CCAC Tournament.
