Heavyweight Tilt in South Bend

SOUTH BEND --- Two of the top three teams in the CCAC put on a show in the Student Activities Center on Wednesday night, as Olivet Nazarene and IU South Bend took to the court. The bout created fireworks, as a 40-minute battle came down to the final seconds. Despite a big halftime lead for the Titans, it was the Tigers to pull ahead late for an 86-85 finish.

IU South Bend handled ONU's press masterfully in the opening half, building rhythm through clean ball movement and patient attacks at the rim. After falling behind 3–0 on the opening possession, the Titans responded immediately with a Tenleigh Phelps layup, a Booker fastbreak, and a Phelps three, taking a 7-6 lead. That sequence ignited a 16-7 stretch in which Phelps scored 10 early points, including another three at the 6:53 mark to push the lead to 15-10.

ONU's pace created chaos, but IUSB dictated efficiency — especially in transition. The Titans capitalized on ONU turnovers and cold shooting to enter the second quarter ahead 25-17, with help from 13 Phelps points.

IUSB continued to stretch its lead with individual bursts. Ava Grant's wing three at 8:32, followed by a Chambers layup off a steal at 8:05, pushed the margin to 32-22. Booker added another momentum shot with a three at 7:03, making it 35-24. The Titans' spacing and composure consistently broke ONU's pressure, and Phelps remained unstoppable, piling up 18 first-half points on efficient drives and post touches.

A late Grant three at :53 extended the lead to 15 at 46-31, giving IUSB its largest advantage of the night moments before halftime.

The Tigers' signature style — fast substitutions, high-octane pace, and nonstop pressing — finally broke through in the third quarter. After IUSB pushed the lead to 19 on a Phelps layup, ONU responded with a furious 19-4 run to end the quarter. The visitors scored 28 in the third behind 10 IUSB turnovers to pull within four points going into the final stanza.

Phelps opened the fourth quarter with a layup but the game was within reach and two teams began to trade blows. The Tigers continued to pressure and scored in transition to move ahead 71–70 — its first lead since 7–6 in the opening minutes.

The Titans put together a nice 6-0 stretch right before the three-minute mark to regain the lead. Booker, Chambers and Phelps each found the bottom of the net, while the defense forced two ONU turnovers and two missed field goals.

As the clock ticked under two minutes, ONU found some more life. The visitors scored on three-of-four possessions, including a go-ahead three-pointer with 1:12 on the clock. Down one at 82-81, the Titans had a look to take control but a three-point shot rimmed out. The Tigers took advantage and nailed a dagger with 15 seconds left to nearly seal the deal. Phelps landed a buzzer beating three but it was not enough, only bringing IUSB within one at 86-85

Phelps offered a fantastic performance for IU South Bend on Wednesday. The senior posted a season-high 30 points, while doing it all with six rebounds, four assists, one block, and one steal. She delivered efficiently, as well, shooting 71.4 percent from the field and 75.0 percent from long range.

Booker and Chamber hit big shots, going for 17 and 14 points, respectively. Kenzie Fulks also put in work as a distributor with a team-high nine assists.
