Titans Sweep Doubleheader at Brewton-Parker

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. --- Indiana University South Bend baseball used late-inning heroics and offensive firepower to sweep Thursday's doubleheader at Brewton-Parker College, earning a 5-2 comeback win in the opener before outlasting the Barons 13-11 in an eight-inning thriller in game two.

With the sweep, the Titans improved to 2-3 on the season.

Game One: Seventh-Inning Rally Lifts Titans, 5-2

Senior outfielder Josiah Nelson put the Titans on the board in the fourth inning with a solo home run to break a scoreless tie. Brewton-Parker responded with back-to-back solo shots in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead.

From there, senior right-hander Josh McCormick took control. McCormick tossed a complete-game effort, striking out eight while allowing just two earned runs over seven innings. The senior kept the Titans within striking distance and set the stage for a dramatic final frame.

In the seventh, junior Luis Turmero worked a leadoff walk and sophomore Carson Mashack entered as a pinch runner. Mashack stole second and later scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

With two outs, junior David Aberouette drew a walk to extend the inning before junior infielder Sam Garner delivered a clutch pinch-hit RBI double to give IU South Bend a 3-2 lead. Senior catcher Nick Turner followed with a two-RBI single to cap a four-run inning and secure the 5-2 victory.

Game Two: Offensive Explosion Completes the Sweep, 13-11

If the opener showcased pitching and timely hitting, game two was a back-and-forth offensive battle from start to finish.

After falling behind early, the Titans grabbed momentum in the third inning when Josiah Nelson crushed a two-run home run to give IU South Bend a 3-1 lead.

Brewton-Parker surged ahead midway through the game, but the Titans answered with a massive seven-run sixth inning. An RBI single from Nelson jumpstarted the rally, and IU South Bend capitalized on multiple defensive miscues to turn a deficit into an 11-7 advantage. Nick Turner added a sacrifice fly during the inning to extend the lead.

The Barons tied the game at 11-11 in the seventh, setting up more late drama.

In the eighth, junior outfielder Evan Fortson delivered the go-ahead blow with a solo home run to put the Titans back in front, 12-11. Senior Lucas Brown followed later in the inning with an RBI single to provide valuable insurance and make it 13-11.

On the mound, senior Max Lines earned the win in relief, and junior Josh Vis closed the door with a scoreless eighth inning to record the save.
