Fulks’ Big Night Pushes IUSB Past Crimson Wave

WHITING, Ind. --- IU South Bend survived a scrappy, back-and-forth contest on Wednesday evening, earning a 72–66 road victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph to improve to 20-7 overall and 15-4 in CCAC play.

Fulks provided some juice for the Titans offense throughout, matching a career-best 22 points and shooting 2-of-3 from long range while adding two assists, two steals, and strong perimeter defense. The sophomore guard was efficient from everywhere, converting at a 76.9 percent clip on the night.

Tenleigh Phelps continued her remarkable February stretch with 22 points and eight rebounds, going 8-of-13 from the floor and attacking the paint all night.

IU South Bend controlled much of the first quarter, riding early threes from Phelps and Booker to a 10-4 lead. The Titans later extended the margin to 21-13 by quarter's end, with Chambers, Fulks, and Phelps combining to shoot 7-for-11 in the frame.

After Keylee Hudson pushed the lead to double digits, CCSJ responded with the night's biggest swing — a 10–0 run beginning at the 4:13 mark in the second quarter. The Titans went scoreless for nearly four minutes, allowing the Crimson Wave to take their first lead of the game at 32-31.

Ava Grant finally brought an end to the run with a triple for IUSB and Fulks finished off the quarter with a bucket to return the edge to IU South Bend before the halftime break.

The Titans steadied themselves out of the break. Fulks opened the third quarter with a jumper, as the team resumed its leading position. Despite a strong third quarter from IUSB, Calumet continued to stick around, down by five heading into the fourth.

Calumet refused to fold. The Crimson Wave pulled within two at 60-58 and later 62-60, but IU South Bend responded with the game-deciding surge.

With 5:02 remaining, Phelps finished through contact for an and-one, converting the free throw to make it 65-60. Defense led to the next two buckets, as Bradie Chambers attacked the rim twice, finishing both transition layups to cap a 7-0 run that pushed the advantage to 69-60, the largest Titan lead of the second half.

From there, IU South Bend managed the clock, secured defensive rebounds, and closed out possessions to keep Calumet from mounting another comeback.
