IU South Bend and Viterbo Trade Wins on Friday

NAPPANEE, Ind. --- High winds and brisk temperatures set the tone Friday afternoon at NorthWood High School as IU South Bend (9-12, 4-2 CCAC) split a conference doubleheader with Viterbo (3-11, 2-4 CCAC).

The opener turned into a back-and-forth battle that came down to the final swing, while game two belonged to the Titans from the first pitch behind an offensive surge and another dominant outing from Gavin Lake.

Game One: Rally Cut Short in 10-8 Loss

With the wind pushing balls across the field and into the gaps, both teams traded punches early.

The Titans answered Viterbo's three-run first with five runs of their own, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Clint Goodman and a two-RBI double from Nick Turner.

Despite trailing late, IU South Bend mounted one final push in the ninth. After putting the tying run aboard, the Titans had life — but a double play ended the rally abruptly, sealing the 10-8 Viterbo victory.

The winds played a factor throughout, as momentum shifted inning by inning in a game that featured 18 combined runs and 23 total hits.

Game Two: Titans Take Control Behind Lake

The nightcap was a different story.

IU South Bend jumped out immediately and never looked back. The offense ignited from the top of the order, with leadoff man Josiah Nelson setting the tone all afternoon. Nelson finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs, including a three-run home run in the fourth inning.

The Titans broke the game open with an eight-run fifth inning, piling up extra-base hits and taking advantage of the momentum. Clint Goodman delivered another two-hit performance, driving in three runs, giving him back-to-back multi-hit games on the day.

On the mound, Gavin Lake was dominant once again. The junior right-hander worked six strong innings, allowing just one run while striking out seven in the winning effort. Lake kept Viterbo off balance all afternoon, limiting solid contact throughout.

Senior Leroy Lepper made his third appearance of the season, tossing one inning of relief to help close out the 14-1 victory.

By the Numbers

Josiah Nelson: 3-for-5, HR, 5 RBIs (Game 2)

Clint Goodman: Back-to-back two-hit games Friday

Gavin Lake: 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 7 K

The two teams will be back at it on Saturday with IU South Bend hosting the doubleheader on Saturday at Penn High School at 1:00 pm.
