Game Recap: Baseball |

Lake, McCormick Log Complete Games in Saturday Sweep

NAPPANEE, Ind. --- On a rainy, wind-swept afternoon at NorthWood High School, IU South Bend baseball opened conference play in dominant fashion, sweeping Olivet Nazarene in a doubleheader defined by elite pitching performances.

Behind two complete games from Josh McCormick and Gavin Lake, the Titans limited the Tigers to just three total runs across 16 innings to secure the opening-day sweep.

Game One: McCormick Goes the Distance in Nine-Inning Battle

Opening up Saturday's doubleheader, McCormick tossed a complete-game nine-inning performance, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out nine. He worked efficiently throughout, navigating traffic and shutting down late threats to preserve the win.

The Titans struck early when Josiah Nelson launched a solo home run in the first inning. The game remained tight until the seventh, when Nick Turner broke it open with a two-run homer to right center.

Olivet answered with a solo home run in the eighth, but IU South Bend added two key insurance runs in the bottom half. Nelson doubled and later scored on an RBI double from Luis Turmero, and Turner added a sacrifice RBI to cap the scoring.

McCormick caught fire in the fifth inning, retiring 14 of the last 15 batters he faced to keep the Tiger offense at bay throughout the afternoon.

Game Two: Lake Deals in Seven-Inning Showcase

If game one belonged to McCormick, the nightcap was a Gavin Lake showcase.

Lake fired a complete-game seven-inning effort, surrendering just two runs on three hits while striking out nine. The junior attacked the strike zone all afternoon, overpowering Olivet's lineup despite the damp and blustery conditions.

IU South Bend jumped ahead in the first inning when John Morgan delivered a two-RBI single after aggressive baserunning put runners in scoring position.

After Olivet trimmed the deficit with a solo homer in the fourth, the Titans answered immediately. Carson Mashack drove in a run with an RBI single in the bottom half to push the lead back to two.

Lake handled the rest, striking out nine and allowing just two earned runs in the 3-2 victory. The final push from the Tigers came in the final frame, as they put the first two runners on base. A strikeout from Lake calmed the storm, before a flyout brought the Titans to the brink of victory. A wild pitch put the two runners in scoring position but a popout ended the game with IUSB still ahead.

The Titans allowed just three total runs on the day while striking out 18 combined batters .

Offensively, Nelson and Turner each homered in game one, while Morgan and Mashack provided key RBIs in the nightcap.

The Titans will look to repeat their success on Sunday, as they face Olivet Nazarene once again beginning at 1:00 pm.
