Game Recap: Baseball |

A Wild, Windy Sunday

NAPPANEE, Ind. --- Under sunny skies and whipping winds at NorthWood High School, IU South Bend baseball split Sunday's doubleheader with Olivet Nazarene to claim the four-game conference series.

The wind was blowing out to left field and both sides took advantage with a combined eight home runs on the day. The two teams continued their close battle over the weekend with two finishes within two runs, as ONU took game one 6-4 and IUSB survived game two 10-9.

IU South Bend moved to 8-11 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Game One: Wind Carries the Bats in 6-4 Loss

With the wind playing a major factor, nine of the combined 10 runs in the opener came on home runs. The long ball led to a 3-1 ONU lead through four frames on two homers.

The Titans answered in the fifth inning when Luis Turmero crushed a two-run homer to tie the game. Moments later, Clint Goodman followed with a solo shot to give IU South Bend a brief 4-3 advantage.

But the Tigers responded with two more homers to reclaim control in a 6-4 final.

Goodman continued his strong weekend at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run and RBI.

Game Two: Early Surge Holds Off Late Drama

IU South Bend jumped on Olivet early, plating three runs in the first inning and three more in the second to seize momentum. The big blow came when Josiah Nelson launched a two-run homer down the left-field line as part of a three-run second inning, putting the Titans up by four at 6-2.

The Titans continued to apply pressure in the fourth, as Sam Garner ripped a two-run double to extend the lead to 9-3.

Olivet Nazarene refused to go quietly.

The Tigers chipped away throughout the middle innings before erupting for three runs in the seventh to pull within one at 10-9. With the tying run standing just 90 feet away and the wind still swirling, the Titans turned to Noah Dowler out of the bullpen.

Dowler delivered under pressure, recording the final out to secure the 10-9 victory and earn the save.

Nelson finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, while Goodman posted his second consecutive two-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Garner added three RBIs in the win.

Max Lines earned the win for the Titans, logging 1.2 innings out of the pen without allowing a hit or a run.

IU South Bend will look to next weekend for continued CCAC play, hosting Viterbo on Friday and Saturday.
