Barnes Delivers Walk-Off in Stunning Comeback

GRANGER, Ind. --- IU South Bend and St. Francis split a dramatic CCAC doubleheader Friday afternoon at Rex Weade Stadium, but the day will be remembered for one of the Titans' most thrilling wins of the season.

Game One: From 9-1 to Walk-Off Winner

Through five and a half innings, the opener looked out of reach.

St. Francis built a 9-1 advantage behind timely extra-base hits and capitalized on two balks in the fifth inning alone. But the Titans refused to fold.

The comeback began in the sixth.

With runners on, Luis Turmero lifted a sacrifice fly to score Lucas Brown, and Clint Goodman followed with a sacrifice fly of his own to bring home Josiah Nelson, cutting the deficit to 9-3.

After a scoreless seventh from the bullpen, the rally intensified in the eighth.

Nelson singled to spark the inning, and Goodman ripped an RBI single down the left-field line to make it 9-4 . Moments later, Nick Turner worked a bases-loaded walk, and David Aberoutte followed with another RBI walk to trim the margin to 9-6. A groundout from Mason Warren brought home another run, making it 9-7 heading into the ninth.

Then came the final surge.

In the bottom of the ninth, Lucas Brown led off with a single before Nelson doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Turmero delivered in the clutch, lining a two-run single to center to tie the game at 9-9.

After a stolen base put the go-ahead run in scoring position, Jack Barnes stepped to the plate and punched a single to left field, scoring Carson Mashack and completing the improbable 10-9 walk-off win without an out on the board.

Nelson finished 4-for-5 with four runs scored, while Turmero drove in four runs on two hits in the victory.

Game Two: Fighting Saints Edge Titans in Defensive Battle

St. Francis struck first with a solo home run in the opening inning and added two runs in the sixth to build a 3-0 lead.

IU South Bend scratched across a run in the seventh when Nick Turner grounded out to score Ben Dubbs, but that would be the only run of the game for the Titans.

Gavin Lake turned in a quality start, allowing three runs over six innings while striking out four, and Josh Vis added a scoreless inning of relief.

Despite six hits in the contest, IU South Bend could not overcome the early deficit as the Saints secured the 3-1 victory.

IU South Bend will be back in action on Saturday at St. Francis with a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm ET.
