Low-Scoring Affair Gets Away, Titans Drop to Elimination Bracket

JOLIET, Ill. --- The No. 6 seed IU South Bend Titans dropped a tightly contested defensive battle Wednesday evening, falling 2-0 to No. 3 Saint Xavier in the opening round of the CCAC Tournament.

Despite the loss, the Titans received a stellar outing from Gavin Lake, who kept IU South Bend within striking distance all night.

Lake turned in an impressive performance on the mound, tossing a complete eight innings while allowing just two runs — only one earned — on five hits. The junior right-hander did not issue a walk and needed just 83 pitches to navigate eight efficient frames.

Saint Xavier broke through in the fifth inning, capitalizing on a bunt single and a throwing error to plate the first run before adding another on a sacrifice fly.

The IUSB offense found two prime opportunities but could not find the decisive hit.

In the fourth inning, Josiah Nelson roped a double to right-center to put a runner in scoring position with one out. Nelson later advanced to third, but a double play ended the threat before IU South Bend could break through.

In the seventh, Clint Goodman singled and advanced to third base after a sacrifice bunt and groundout. Once again, the Titans were unable to bring the run home.

IU South Bend finished with four hits on the night, with singles from Goodman, Jack Barnes, Lucas Brown, and Nelson's key double.

With the loss, the Titans move into the elimination bracket. IU South Bend will face the loser of No. 1 St. Ambrose and No. 4 Judson.

That matchup will be determined in the first game Thursday at 11:00 am ET, with the Titans scheduled to play at 5:00 pm ET as they look to extend their season.
