Carson Rewrites Record Book in Montana Finale

BUTTE, Mont. --- Alyssa Carson put together a record-breaking performance to close out IU South Bend volleyball's weekend at the Big Sky Challenge, smashing a program-record 32 kills as the Titans pushed Carroll College to five sets Saturday evening.

Carson's historic outing highlighted a competitive final day in Montana for IUSB. The Titans first battled Arizona Christian in a four-set match, 17-25, 25-21, 22-25, 22-25, before returning to the Butte Civic Center floor and taking Carroll to the wire in a 29-27, 22-25, 25-23, 16-25, 13-15 thriller.

After dropping the opening set in their match against Arizona Christian, the Titans produced their best offensive frame of the match in the second. IUSB recorded 17 kills and hit .325, turning a 14-14 tie into a 22-17 advantage before closing out a 25-21 victory.

The final two sets remained competitive. IUSB pulled within one at 20-21 late in the third before Arizona Christian created enough separation to take it 25-22. In the fourth, the Titans erased an early deficit and eventually fought all the way to tie the score but Arizona Christian managed the final points to finish the match.

Brynn Lake did a great job at directing the offense, finishing with 32 assists, 10 digs, three kills and two aces. Emily Adams collected 17 digs and three aces, while IUSB totaled 10 service aces as a team.

In match number two on Saturday, Carson erupted for 32 kills on 61 attacks, committing only five errors to hit .443 against Carroll. Her 32 kills established a new IU South Bend single-match record, while her 33.5 points and 19 digs completed a dominant all-around performance. Carson accounted for more than half of the Titans' 59 kills in the match.

She opened the match with five kills in the first set, helping IUSB erase a 24-21 deficit. Carson put away a swing to tie the frame at 25 before the Titans eventually fought off Carroll for a 29-27 win.

Carson added six more kills in the second, bringing her total to 11 through two frames. Even as Carroll answered with a 25-22 victory, Carson remained the focal point of an IUSB attack that stayed within a point as late as 22-23.

Her biggest set came in the third.

Carson hammered nine kills in the frame, including four after the score reached 12-12. With the set tied at 23, Carson delivered consecutive kills to move the Titans to set point before Emalee Maesch finished the frame for a 25-23 victory and a 2-1 match advantage.

The Saints stepped up in the fourth to pull ahead and force a fifth and final set. The two teams traded blows with the match hanging in balance. A good run for Carroll put them ahead 13-8 but IUSB had one final push left. Four-straight points cut the deficit to one but it was not enough as the Saints snuck away with a 15-13 win in set five for a 3-2 match win.

Carson's final line — 32 kills, 19 digs, a .443 hitting percentage and 33.5 points — was the centerpiece of a match in which the Titans repeatedly answered Carroll's runs. She also contributed a solo block and a block assist.

Maesch finished with nine kills and 11 digs, while Kate Dole was extremely efficient in the middle with six kills on 11 swings without an error, good for a .545 hitting percentage. Kendall Gerdes recorded three solo blocks, and Teressa Campanello added three kills, eight digs and two aces.

Norris directed the attack with 37 assists and nine digs, while Lake chipped in another 16 assists. Adams was everywhere defensively, finishing with a season-high 27 digs while adding three aces. IUSB totaled 86 digs in the five-set battle.

IU South Bend will return to Indiana and help host the Mishawaka Mayhem on Friday and Saturday, beginning with Rochester Christian on Friday at 1:00 pm.
