Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

A Friday Split

SOUTH BEND --- IU South Bend volleyball returned to the Student Activities Center on Friday and split its first two matches of the Mishawaka Mayhem, opening the tournament with a convincing sweep of Rochester Christian before a tightly-contested nightcap against Defiance slipped away in three sets.

The Titans rolled to a 25-16, 25-14, 25-16 victory over Rochester Christian, putting together one of their most complete offensive performances of the young season. IU South Bend finished with 45 kills while hitting .314, including marks of .406 and .316 in the first and third sets.

Alyssa Carson picked up right where she left off following her record-setting weekend in Montana. The sophomore led all Titans with 16 kills on .364 hitting and added 10 digs for a double-double. Kadence Brumitt was equally efficient, putting away 10 kills with just two errors to hit .400 while adding nine digs.

IU South Bend also received steady production throughout the lineup. Emalee Maesch recorded seven kills, nine digs and three aces, while Kendall Gerdes and Kate Dole each finished with four kills. Brynn Lake made the most of her opportunities offensively with four kills on six swings while adding 14 assists. Mia Norris led the Titans with 19 assists, and Emily Adams collected a match-high 14 digs.

The opening set remained close through the early stages before IUSB began creating separation. A 14-14 score quickly turned into a 20-14 Titan advantage, with Maesch supplying two aces during the stretch. Brumitt later put together three consecutive kills as IUSB closed the frame comfortably, 25-16.

The Titans never allowed Rochester Christian to find much of a rhythm from there. IUSB pulled away midway through the second and held the Warriors to a negative hitting percentage in the frame before Carson helped close out the 25-14 win. The third followed a similar pattern, with the Titans turning a 10-10 tie into a 14-10 advantage and steadily building from there to complete the sweep.

Despite the final score showing a sweep, very little separated IU South Bend and Defiance. The Titans held meaningful leads in all three sets and reached at least 22 points in each, but Defiance found enough answers late to escape with wins of 26-24, 25-22 and 26-24.

IUSB appeared to have the opening set firmly in its grasp after building a 23-17 advantage. Defiance responded with six straight points to erase the cushion, but Carson stopped the run with a kill that gave the Titans set point at 24-23. The Yellow Jackets answered once more, taking the final three rallies to steal the opener, 26-24.

The Titans again spent much of the second set in front. They led 17-13 and later held a 21-18 advantage before Defiance worked its way back even at 21. Carson put IUSB ahead one more time at 22-21, but the Yellow Jackets closed on a four-point run to take a two-set advantage.

There was one more chance to extend the night in the third.

IU South Bend overcame an early deficit with a six-point surge that put the Titans ahead 12-9. The teams continued trading runs from there, with IUSB eventually moving in front 22-20 after a block from Dole and Brumitt. Defiance rallied, but the Titans answered again to tie the set at 24. Two final points went to the visitors, ending another two-point set and a match that was considerably closer than the 3-0 result suggested.

Carson again paced the offense with 12 kills and 11 digs, giving her a second double-double on the day. Brumitt turned in a strong all-around effort with eight kills on .250 hitting, 13 digs, two aces and five block assists, while Maesch added seven kills and 10 digs.

The Titans were particularly active at the net against Defiance, recording 14 block assists. Dole was involved in four blocks, while Gerdes added three and Carson chipped in one. Norris and Lake combined for 23 assists, and Adams added 11 digs.

IU South Bend will be right back to it on Saturday morning hosting Mount Mercy at 10:00 am and Indiana Tech at 2:00 pm.
