Titans Wrap Up Mishawaka Mayhem

SOUTH BEND --- IU South Bend volleyball closed out the Mishawaka Mayhem with two more matches inside the Student Activities Center on Saturday, taking on Mount Mercy in four sets before finishing the weekend against Indiana Tech.

The Titans opened the day with a fast start against Mount Mercy, racing out to a 7-0 advantage behind a pair of aces from Mia Norris and early pressure at the net. IUSB continued to build on the lead and eventually held a 20-12 advantage before the Mustangs worked their way back into the frame.

What had been a comfortable margin turned into a battle beyond 25, but the Titans found the answer. Alyssa Carson finished off the extended set with a kill for a 28-26 victory.

Mount Mercy responded from there, taking the next three sets 25-20, 25-12 and 25-20 to secure the four-set victory. The Mustangs' offense found its stride as the match progressed, hitting .364 in the third and .293 in the fourth.

Brumitt supplied the most consistent production for the Titans, leading the team with 15 kills on .229 hitting while adding nine digs, three assists and an ace. Carson followed with 11 kills and 13 digs, while Kate Dole put together an efficient match in the middle with eight kills on .263 hitting.

The Titans also had success at the net, totaling 16 block assists. Dole and Kendall Gerdes were each involved in four blocks, while Carson added a solo block and three block assists. Emily Adams paced the back row with 16 digs, and Norris and Brynn Lake each handed out 16 assists.

IU South Bend returned to the floor later Saturday against Indiana Tech and fell in straight sets, 18-25, 25-27, 14-25. The middle frame provided the highlight of the match, with the Titans producing their strongest stretch of volleyball against the Warriors.

IUSB came out aggressively in the second and built an early advantage behind contributions from throughout the lineup. Maesch, Dole and Carson all found the floor as the Titans eventually stretched their lead to 18-9. Indiana Tech worked its way back into the set, but IUSB still had opportunities late. Carson delivered consecutive kills to give the Titans set points at 24-23 and 25-24 before the Warriors ultimately edged out the frame, 27-25.

Carson and Brumitt shared the team lead with eight kills apiece against Indiana Tech. Brumitt hit .261 and collected a team-best 13 digs, while Carson added nine digs. Gerdes finished with three kills on six swings and was involved in three blocks.

Lake handled the bulk of the setting duties with 19 assists and six digs, while Olivia Ringer provided a spark from the service line with two aces. Georgi Patten also saw action in the tournament finale, finishing with two kills and a block assist.

The IU South Bend squad will now turn its attention to conference play, hosting St. Francis on Tuesday at 7:00 pm in the Student Activities Center.
