Titans Turn the Tables on St. Francis in Five-Set CCAC Opener

SOUTH BEND --- Nearly 10 months after St. Francis ended IU South Bend's 2025 season in a five-set CCAC Tournament thriller, the Titans had their turn Tuesday night.

IU South Bend opened conference play by outlasting the Fighting Saints in five sets, 25-14, 23-25, 25-23, 24-26, 15-8, inside the Student Activities Center. The victory moved the Titans to 5-9 overall and, more importantly, started their CCAC schedule with a win.

The rematch of last season's CCAC Quarterfinal delivered another back-and-forth five-set contest, but this time IUSB controlled the deciding frame.

Before getting there, the Titans opened the night with a convincing first set. Kadence Brumitt helped IUSB jump ahead early with a kill and an ace, and the advantage quickly grew. A 9-8 lead turned into 21-9 as the Titans applied pressure from the service line and forced St. Francis into mistakes. IUSB hit .241 while holding the Saints to a negative attack percentage in the 25-14 opener.

St. Francis responded in the second, but not without a push from the Titans. IUSB erased a 14-10 deficit with five straight points, highlighted by a Kate Dole, Alyssa Carson block and another Brumitt ace. The teams traded the lead from there before the Saints narrowly evened the match with a 25-23 decision.

The third featured another tight finish. IU South Bend led 9-4 early before St. Francis worked its way back, eventually taking a 22-21 advantage. The Titans answered when Brynn Lake put down a kill, a Saints attack error moved IUSB ahead and Alyssa Carson followed with a kill for set point. After St. Francis briefly extended the frame, Carson struck again to finish off the 25-23 win.

Neither team could create much separation in the fourth. The Titans fought back from a 19-15 deficit and eventually moved in front 23-22 after consecutive Carson kills. St. Francis answered, and after the set tied at 24, the Saints claimed the next two points for a 26-24 victory that forced a fifth.

The deciding set was all IU South Bend.

Carson opened the fifth with a kill, and IUSB scored the first eight points of the frame. Brumitt did much of the damage from the service line as St. Francis struggled to get its offense established, while Emalee Maesch and Kate Dole combined on a block during the run. Carson then took care of the offense. She put down kills for the Titans' ninth and 10th points before Maesch helped push the advantage to 11-5. Three consecutive St. Francis attacking errors brought IUSB to match point, and a service error finished off the 15-8 fifth-set victory.

Carson once again headlined the Titan attack. The sophomore reached 20 kills for the second time this season, finishing with 20 on 57 swings while adding 14 digs and three block assists for a double-double. Tuesday marked Carson's ninth match with double-digit kills through IUSB's first 14 contests.

Three Titans joined her in double figures. Maesch collected 11 kills and 17 digs, while Brumitt finished with 10 kills, 17 digs and four service aces. Dole provided an efficient presence in the middle, turning 10 attacks into six kills with only two errors for a .400 hitting percentage, while also contributing a solo block and three block assists.

The setters split the workload, with Mia Norris recording 26 assists and 13 digs and Lake adding 17 assists. The Titans also created consistent pressure from behind the service line, finishing with 12 aces compared with four for St. Francis.

And when rallies extended, Emily Adams was there. Adams piled up 27 digs, marking her third match this season with at least 27. She also added two aces and even put away two kills as part of an IUSB defense that accumulated 95 digs over five sets.

The Titans will now have the weekend off and turn their focus on a matchup at Saint Xavier on Thursday, September 10 at 8:00 pm.
