Road Race Favors Cougars

CHICAGO --- Three sets separated IU South Bend and Saint Xavier on Thursday night, but there was little breathing room between the two sides.

The Titans stayed within striking distance throughout their latest CCAC road test, taking the Cougars beyond 25 in the opener and reaching 21 in each of the final two frames. Saint Xavier ultimately found the finishing points each time, handing IUSB a 26-24, 25-21, 25-21 defeat inside the Shannon Center.

While the Titans could not turn those close sets into a victory, Kadence Brumitt provided a bright spot with a standout third set.

Despite the sweep, the Titans had opportunities throughout the night, most notably in an opening set that went beyond 25. IUSB led by as many as four late in the frame before Saint Xavier mounted a comeback to take the early advantage.

The Titans found themselves trailing 16-13 midway through the opener before putting together their best run of the set. Alyssa Carson landed an ace and later a kill to pull IUSB even at 18. After an SXU point, the Titans reeled off five straight behind a Carson kill, a Saint Xavier attacking error, an ace from Renee Shrewsbury and a Kadence Brumitt kill to take a 23-19 advantage.

The Cougars responded to tie the set at 23. IUSB fought off Saint Xavier's first set point to make it 24-24, but SXU grabbed the next two rallies for the 26-24 decision.

Saint Xavier built more separation in the second set, although the Titans continued to hang around. IUSB faced a 19-14 deficit before Shrewsbury's serve helped spark a late push. Her ace brought the Titans within three, and Brumitt later put away consecutive kills as IUSB trimmed the margin to 21-18. The Cougars eventually closed out the frame, 25-21.

Brumitt then did nearly everything she could to extend the match in the third.

IU South Bend recorded nine kills in the final set, and seven came off Brumitt's right arm. That meant the junior accounted for nearly 78 percent of IUSB's kills in the frame. She put away her first at 6-9, added another to make it 9-11 and continued finding the floor as the Titans attempted to work their way back into the set.

Her strongest stretch came late. With IUSB down 19-13, Brumitt delivered kills for four of the Titans' next five points, including back-to-back swings that cut the deficit to 19-16. She struck again at 17-20 and 18-22, keeping the Titans within striking distance before Saint Xavier finished the set 25-21.

Brumitt finished the match with a team-high 14 kills on 32 attacks and only three errors, good for a .344 hitting percentage. Brumitt also collected 12 digs and a solo block to finish with 15 total points for the night.

Carson followed with five kills, 12 digs, two aces, a solo block and two block assists, while Maesch added nine digs. Brynn Lake handed out a team-best 13 assists, with Mia Norris adding six assists, three digs and an ace. Shrewsbury provided two of the Titans' five service aces.

IUSB's defense kept the Titans within reach throughout the match, collecting 49 digs and eight total block contributions.

IU South Bend will be back at home next week on Thursday, taking on No. 22 IU Kokomo at 7:00 pm.
