Titans Push Third Set, Fall at Governors State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. --- IU South Bend found its best volleyball of the night with its back against the wall Tuesday, but the late push wasn't enough to extend the match. Governors State handed the Titans a 25-19, 25-18, 30-28 road loss, dropping IUSB to 7-13 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

The Titans showed some offensive efficiency in the opening set, hitting .343 with 14 kills and only two errors, but Governors State was even sharper at .387 and gradually created separation. The Jaguars followed with a 25-18 second-set victory to put IUSB in a two-set hole.

The third set turned into the night's best battle, with the Titans producing 21 kills and hitting .245. IUSB trailed 10-7 early before working back into the frame and eventually pulling even at 15-15. Kadence Brumitt then landed a kill and followed with an ace as the Titans moved in front, 18-16.

From there, neither side could shake the other. IU South Bend moved ahead 23-20 behind consecutive kills from Alyssa Carson, but Governors State answered and eventually tied the set at 24. The teams continued trading points well beyond regulation, with the score reaching 25-25, 26-26, 27-27 and 28-28. After six set-point opportunities for IUSB, it was the Jaguars who finally secured the last two rallies for the 30-28 win and the sweep.

Emalee Maesch turned in one of the Titans' strongest individual performances of the evening, leading the team with 13 kills on .355 hitting while adding 11 digs for a double-double. Brumitt was right behind with 12 kills, 13 digs and two service aces, giving IUSB another strong all-around outing.

Kate Dole was efficient in the middle with six kills on 12 swings and only one error, hitting .417. Carson finished with eight kills and 10 digs, while Kendall Gerdes made the most of limited action with three kills on five attempts.

Brynn Lake handled the bulk of the setting duties and finished with 27 assists and six digs, while Emily Adams collected 12 digs. The Titans finished with 45 kills and a .213 attack percentage but were hurt by Governors State's .286 hitting and nine service aces.

The Titans will be back in action at Calumet on Thursday at 8:00 pm ET.
