SOUTH BEND, Ind.- The Indiana University South Bend Titans (11-12, 9-3 CCAC) swept Saint Xavier University (16-7, 11-1 CCAC) by scores of 25-20, 25-11, 25-15. Thursday night's win moves IU South Bend into a tie for third place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) where they currently hold the tiebreaker over Trinity International University.
Tied at 7-7 in set one, a kill from
Alexis Joyner gave the Titans the lead which they held on to for the remainder of the set. Down to their final point, the Cougars of Saint Xavier sparked a late rally, scoring five straight points to bring them within four at 24-20. A service error from outside hitter Avanna Martinez ended the Saint Xavier rally, giving the Titans the win in set one.
Back and forth early in set two, IU South Bend led 11-9 before they went on to score 14 of the next 16 points to run away with set two.
Abigail Seeger put the finishing touches on set two with two kills in the last four points of the set, including the set point kill to give the Titans a 2-0 lead in the match.
Tied at 10-10 in set three, five straight points for the Titans forced a Saint Xavier timeout with IU South Bend now leading 15-10. Kills from
Alexis Joyner and
Abigail Seeger brought the Titans within two points of handing Saint Xavier their first conference loss. Back to back blocks from
McKenzie Powell and
Abigail Seeger led the Titans to victory in set three, 25-15.
A well balanced IU South Bend offense featured four players with at least six kills, led by
Abigail Seeger with 11.
McKenzie Powell posted yet another double-double with 26 assists and 11 digs. Powell also added two aces and two blocks, one of which completed the sweep for the final point of the game.
Defensively, four different Titans posted double digit digs, led by
Suriya Van der Oord with 17.
IU South Bend continued their dominance at the net, featuring five different players with at least two blocks, led by
Abigail Seeger with five.
The Indiana University South Bend Titans return to action on Tuesday, October 25th, at 7:00 PM when then square up with Trinity International University. The Titans look to remain unbeaten at home and break a tie with TIU for third place in the CCAC.
