GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – ­In day one of the 2019 Cornerstone Classic, the Indiana University South Bend volleyball team split a doubleheader on Friday as the Titans improved to 12-9 overall. IUSB defeated Cornerstone (3-2) in the first match of the day before falling to Grace College (3-2) in the final match of the day at CU.

In the first game against host school Cornerstone, the Titans dropped the first set 25-15 before taking the second the third set. The Golden Eagles forced a fifth and decisive set after winning 25-23 but IUSB took the victory with a 15-7 fifth set score.

In her first game back after suffering a concussion against Cardinal Stritch Robbie Berg added a game-high 20 kills to go along with 15 digs while senior counterpart Samantha Hockstra added a team-high 22 digs. Sophomore McKenzie Powell dished out a team-high 49 assists and junior Julie Brown added one block solo and four block assists for the Titans.

In the nightcap, the Titans and Grace College traded set victories back-and-forth as IUSB saw itself in its fourth straight match that went into the fifth and deciding set. This time the opponents had its way as Grace defeated IUSB 15-7 in the fifth.

Junior transfer Hannah Marchand added a team-high 16 kills while Hockstra added 19 digs. Berg and Powell followed behind with 17 kills, respectively. Powell also added a Titan-high 39 assists in five sets. Brown added seven total blocks inside Mohl Arena in the final match of the night.

IUSB returns to action tomorrow to face Bethel (11 AM) and Lawrence Tech (1 PM) concluding the Cornerstone Classic and the final non-conference matchups of the 2019 regular-season.
